Fromm Dog Food Overview
“The Company,” as it was originally named, has been privately owned and operated by the Fromm and Nieman families since 1904. Both families have been related by marriage and business since the mid-1800s. When “The Company” was formed, its mission was to breed silver foxes, and cultivate and harvest ginseng.
In the 1930s they introduced the first canine and feline distemper vaccines, and during the 1940s innovated the first dry kibble form of pet food.
In 1948, “Federal Foods Inc.,” was formed by biochemist Dr. Willard Roberts, Loyal Wells, and Fromm Bros. Nieman Company with Edwin J. Nieman Sr., as its majority owner. Federal Foods sold its first product in 1949, which was a bag of “Fromm Complete Dog Meal.”
In 1995, Federal Foods Inc. was renamed “Fromm Family Foods” to reflect its fourth-generation ownership.
As of 2016, the company has been owned and in operation for 112 years, and is presently in its fifth-generation of ownership.
Where is Fromm manufactured?
- All their dry pet foods and low-fat treats are manufactured at their two USDA-inspected facilities, located in Mequon and Columbus, Wisconsin.
- Their grain-free treats are made in Wisconsin at a USDA-inspected partner plant.
- Their canned recipes are made either at their family-owned and operated USDA-inspected cannery in Wisconsin, or at a USDA-inspected partner plant in South Dakota.
- None of their ingredients are from China, however, some of the vitamins and minerals they use in their recipes are imported from Europe.

Fromm manufactures three ‘dry’ dog food formulas and two ‘wet’ dog food formulas. The “Fromm Four-Star Nutritionals®” line also produces numerous treat recipes available in both low-fat and grain-free varieties.

Fromm Dog Food Recalls
On March 18, 2016, Fromm voluntarily recalled all lots of the following three “Fromm Gold Nutritionals®” canned dog food:
- Fromm Gold Chicken Pate (12 ounce cans)
- Fromm Gold Chicken & Duck
- Fromm Gold Salmon & Chicken Pate
Fromm had discovered through its own analysis that the affected canned dog foods did not contain recommended levels of vitamins and minerals. The products may have also contained elevated levels of Vitamin D.
Fromm sent a statement out to customers on their mailing list advising them not to feed their dogs any of the recalled products. They said that if “dogs were fed exclusively these products for 60 days, the expected effect would be a reduction in appetite.”
Although there were no reported health problems, Fromm notified the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and also invited distributors to share this event with consumers.
Summary
Fromm is a holistic plant-based dog food using a moderate amount of various species as its main sources of animal protein, allergen-free fruits and vegetables, and nutritious grains, therefore, making it highly recommended.
In 1983, Tom Nieman the president and owner of Fromm, inherited the company from his Grandmother Erna Fromm. Nieman obtained a chemical engineering degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and was an understudy to the late Dr. Willard Robert, PH.D, who is recognized as the pioneer of dry pet food. Having a chemical engineer as head of the company, is a great advantage for the continued production of high quality food.
Fromm guarantees that none of their products are preserved with any artificial preservatives, or imported from China.
Considering that the family-owned company has been making pet food since 1949, and they had only one voluntary recall emphasizes the high standards of Fromm dog food.
